Some Favourite Magazines

Magazines are wonderful things.

From a comforting flick through in the Dentist’s waiting room to some well earned cover-to-cover me time – magazines are always there for us. Here at First Option we’ve hosted a countless number of tv shows, feature films, online channels, photoshoots, pop-ups, weddings and so much more in between and seeing the finished product is always a thrill, but there’s nothing more captivating than a hot off the press magazine. There is something about the tangibility of the object that yields an arresting impression – The bright images and monochrome text, the smell of the gloss and ink, the swooping sound of every page turn and being able to hold it all in your own two hands.

So much so we’ve put together a list of some of our favourite magazines, together with some examples of their work, most of whom we’ve been lucky enough to share the studio with.

Warehouse Home

Warehouse Home is a biannual interiors magazine full of design ideas that serve as perfect inspiration for anyone living in a warehouse conversion as well as those wishing to add a distinctive industrial aesthetic to their homes.

Set up in 2014, Warehouse Homes shot their launch issue at First Option, making full use of the studio’s exposed brick wall and original Victorian features. More of their fantastic design ideas can be found on their website.

Wonderland Magazine

Wonderland is an international, independently published magazine offering a distinctive look across all facets of popular culture: fashion, film, music and art.

Their aim is to represent the positive and the playful elements of the fashion industry. This can be seen through their uniquely glamourised photoshoots, which in the past have featured some of the world’s biggest pop icons of both yesterday and today. Wonderland has also seen the likes of Taylor Swift, Nikki Minaj & Kit Harington grace their covers.

NME

New Musical Express (NME) is one of the oldest music journalism magazines, first published in 1952. It was also the first British paper to include a music singles chart. In the 1970s it became the best-selling British music newspaper, and gradually moved toward a magazine format during the 1980s and 1990s.

Being one of the longest established music magazines has meant that NME has seen most of the world’s biggest music acts of the 20th and 21st Century feature in the publication, with appearances from The Clash, Morrissey,  Amy Winehouse and David Bowie, to name a few.
